Vigil

With an evening fire to give me warmth
I stand Vigil on a distant hilltop
Looking upon the nightly starlit sky
Wondering what makes the stars shine so bright
And the moon glow as thought it is an angel

I recollect as my fire burns; as it shoots its embers into dark sky
While the moon still illuminates its beauty down to earth
And nocturnal stars twinkle, their heart out
As though it’s their last shining moment
To sparkle among the heavens

With a quick glance to the sky
I make a wish, wondering if it will come true
As a shooting star zips across the nightly sky
And into the depths of space
Where many more wishes will be made

Now my fire is dying
As fleeing time passes by
And I still gaze upon the illuminating sky
Thinking what it is like to be a star
To twinkle with the heavens

My fire is now just a few burning coals
Giving off what light it can
And I still gaze at the sky with delight
Knowing the sun will rise again
With a new day to begin
